Just send them your QCad file in DXF format. DXF is one of the native file formats of AutoCAD and can also be read by most other CAD programs. Hello I use q-cad already since a half year and get along with it completely well. Now I have a problem. I get finished designs by DXF data course and I can regard these, but seize no line. Despite repeated blowing up of the whole design one cannot seize a line. The program says in the lower line: No object selected. Can someone help me? The hatch area must be > enclosed exactly, and cannot be enclosed if one of the enclosing > lines > is protruding from the area. To repeat roughly what I explained in the june '04 posting I refered to, The way I would do this is: - Create layer --hx (i.e. hatch line) color red linethickness zero. - Draw AP, PR, RQ, QA using snap-to-endpoint (five clicks). - I already have, or now create layer hx13 (for hatch in pen thickness .13mm, name reflects line thickness if I need other hatches, or occasionally I separate types of hatch by function). - Turn off all layers, turn on --hx and also hx13. Enter layer hx13. - Select (in this example select all, often using area select to choose just some or just one area at a time), and apply hatch. - Turn on all layers. Turn off all layers beginning '--'. - There you have it. As I remarked previously, this is a bit laborious, but it is really fast and trouble-free. It is easy to maintain and modify the hatches when altering the drawing. It is easy to apply multiple and overlapping areas of hatch (I occasionally use multiple --hx outline layers to simplify selection of adjacent areas). And it is easy to draw hatches with no outline, which is often needed for more artistic effect -- when projecting shadow areas for example (the shadows usually end at locations where there is no line on the drawing). This proceedure eliminates selection problems, and simplifies printing versions of the drawing with and without hatches, etc. I cannot claim it is work-free, but it is a method of retaining a consistent and manageable drawing. (A line represents a single edge: to me it seems wrong to break it into parts just for the hatch.) HTH richard ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Fair play? Hi. Cutting B doesn't work if you also want to hatch the pipe wall. Better to draw each part on a different layer. I have battled this issue too, I keep thinking back to Corel draw or page maker where you hold the shift key down and keep clicking until you have selected the item you want. Seemed so simple. steve jlinkels wrote:

Dear Richard,
Thanks for your explanation of drawing on a quantum mechanial basis.
:-) What I missed in this was the mentioning of the Pauli exclusion:
no
two lines can be at the same location on the same layer.
But now seriously: You are right that there is no real reason to have
two overlapping lines at the same location. On real paper you don't
do
that either. But on real paper you never need an exactly enclosed
area
with line pieces instead of lines. Consider this example. It is one
side of a cylinder with a flange attached.
_____________
| |A | flange
| |____|
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |B
| |
| | cylinder
-------
As usual, I draw the cylinder part first, and then the flange.
However, in order to hatch the flange line "A" MUST be a separate
line, and may not be the same line as "B". The hatch area must be
enclosed exactly, and cannot be enclosed if one of the enclosing
lines
is protruding from the area.
So either I draw a separate line on top of "B" (with all the
selection
problem mentioned) or I have to cut line "B" in two parts. Cutting
means: go to edit menu, select "cut", select line, select snap mode,
select cutting point. That is a lot of work.
Kind regards
jlinkels

There is no reason to draw the same line twice -- on a pen plotter this is simply wasteful of time and ink, on a printer merely unnecessary. I do create bosons, mainly when drawing adjacent rectangles, but when I come across them, I purge the duplicates as they serve no purpose. Your lines are like bosons, indistinguishable and interchangeable. I think layers should be used to distinguish all sets of lines that serve different functions. To simplify work on the drawing, I also recommend setting a different color to each layer unless the drawing is a display drawing in which the actual colour is important. For example, I always use a separate layer for hatch area outlines, and give the lines on that layer a zero thickness and bright colour. See my posting on 15 June 2004 for details of this method. (I have modified my habits since then, and name all layers that are not to be printed with names beginning with a '-', so that they are clustered at the top of the list ready for switching off before printing. Anyway, the point of the fermion-boson analogy is that the selection problem when trimming or joining disappears when you work what I would call 'correctly', using layers to avoid bosons accumulating in little bose-einstein condensates all over your drawing. And the question of selection for hatch outlines is different: if the lines are coincident it actually does not matter which you select, as the hatch area only acquires its coordinates from the selection - it is not tied to the particular lines you used. If the lines are in fact different lengths but coincident in part, then for hatch outline purposes you can use 'select window' to distinguish the one you want (if there are shorter coincident lines, you will need to deselect them similarly). But it is far simpler to use the separate layer for hatch outline, as I explained in that 15 June 2004 post. Hope my ramblings are useful to someone... -- richard ------------------------ Yahoo! I found this (maybe downright stupid) method for selecting an object which is overlapped by other objects on the same layer. I select the object which I hope is the correct object. If it is the wrong object, I delete it by pressing <DEL>. The I select the next hopefully right object. If it is not the right object I delete it again. This way I continue until I finally select the really wanted object, which became possible because all other objects are deleted. Once the correct object is selected, I undo all deletions with CTRL-Z. To my great joy, deletions ARE undone, but selections ARE NOT. So I end up with the corrected object selected, and all other objects back again. This works especially great when trying to select a closed contour for hatching, which can be extremely difficult with overlapping lines. For selection of the first line during trimming it also works great. For selecting the second entity during trimming ... well... not yet. jlinkels --- In qcad-user-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, list+qcad-user@xxxx, Chaiken@xxxx wrote: > > > looney_Saint wrote: > >> I need to trim more than two objects. These are available in at least two sizes at reasonable cost. They plug in to the USB port. The included driver software makes them appear to QCad (and other applications) as a mouse, but one that has absolute rather than realtive positioning. As for CalComp/Summagraphics etc, I believe you will just need to get the equivalent driver software for your operating system. QCad does not (and should not) support them directly, but interfaces to them through the Qt library and the operating system. Robin ------------------------ Yahoo! Hi, I am a fairly new user myself but I have a solution. Since architectural units in QCad are inches only I converted 5' 4 1/2" to the number of inches only, ie either 64.5 or 64 1/2, no foot' or inches " symbol. This works straight off. I am sure there is a better way but for a quick solution this may be of help. I am in Australia and we now use metric only, but I am old enough to have learned in imperial (inches etc). Hi All, I've been using QCad for a relatively short time and am finding it enjoyable to use, albeit a little mind bending for an old drawing board guy. The learning curve isn't as steep as with the more complicated CAD programs and (with manual in hand)I can actually get acceptable results relatively quickly now. My question: Has anyone tried using a digitizer tablet or board like those made by CalComp or Summagraphics with QCad? Specifically, these connect to a PC through the RS232 port and require the CAD program to recognize inputs from the transducer used with the digitizer coming from this source rather than the mouse. It would sure speed things up to be able to transfer data from a photo or drawing to QCad via this route. Thanks for any info anyone can provide. Tom ------------------------ Yahoo! QCAD Library Browser / QCAD Help File / qt Slackware 10.1 1/ QCAD Library Browser After compiling qcad 2.0.4.0-1 on Slackware 10.1 I too had the 'empty library browser' problem as detailed in: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qcad-user/message/1299 The fix that worked for me is here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qcad-user/message/1317 2/ QCAD Help file When I selected Help > Manual absolutely nothing happened. After some googling I found a RedHat patch which fixes the problem: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-extras-comm its/2005-February/msg00296.html I needed to adjust the patch to suit my own Slackware 10.1 nstallation before recompiling qcad. The file to edit is: .../qcad-2.0.4.0-1.src/qcad/src/qc_applicationwindow.cpp Change these two lines: line 2768 from: assistant = new QAssistantClient(RS_SYSTEM->getAppDir()+"/bin", this); to: assistant = new QAssistantClient("/usr/bin", this); and line 2771 from: args << QDir::convertSeparators(RS_SYSTEM->getDocPath() + "/qcaddoc.adp"); to: args << QDir::convertSeparators("/opt/qcad/doc/qcaddoc.adp"); line 2768 calls /usr/bin/assistant which is the Qt tool for presenting on-line documentation. It was installed as part of qt. If assistant is installed elsewhere, change '/usr/bin' to suit. line 2771 tells Qt assistant where to find the documentation. I decided to install qcad under /opt. So I unpacked qcad-manual-en-2.0.4.0-1.html.zip into /opt/qcad/doc Then '/opt/qcad/doc/cad/*' contains the manual and '/opt/qcad/doc/qcaddoc.adp' contains manual structure for Qt assistant. If you install the manual elsewhere, adjust '/opt/qcad/doc/qcaddoc.adp' to suit. 3/ As mentioned in my previous post, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qcad-user/message/1314 I had to modify the standard Slackware 10.1 qt-3.3.3-i486-3 installation. After recompiling qcad I then removed (removepkg) my modified qt and reinstalled (installpkg) the standard Slackware 10.1 qt-3.3.3-i486-3. qcad keeps running OK - so it seems that the modified qt is only needed to compile qcad. ------------------------ Yahoo! Thanks for the help Frank and Fred. Entered the line as posted and opened QCad, found the printer straight off. Fred, I had already given up about this printing problem, see my earlier posts about this. But your fix worked, and not only for QCAD, but for Opera as well, and I assume for other Qt based applications. Hi, I just compiled qcad on Slackware 10.1 and had the same problem. I fixed the problem by recompiling, but before recompiling I put the contents of the parts library 'partlibrary-2.1.1.2-1.zip' into a directory 'library' under 'qcad'. i.e. .../qcad-2.0.4.0-1.src/qcad/library/... .../qcad-2.0.4.0-1.src/qcad/library/architecture etc. Then when I run qcad I setup the library path from: Edit > Application Preferences > Paths > Part Libraries: and then magically the part libraries appeared from: Views > View > Library Browser (The first time I compiled I put the library directory in place, but I copied it into qcad/library after compiling. Then I had the empty library browser that you described. It seems that qcad compiling looks to see if there is a directory called library in qcad - but this is only a guess. Can't find this test in the scripts/makefiles etc. And I still have a problem that Help > Manual doesn't do anything. Am hoping to fix that problem by a similar technique.) ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Get Bzzzy! (real tools to help you find a job). Hello, I am running QCad in Ubuntu hoary. When I first set QCad up I had no printer installed, I have dug out an old FUJITSU DL1200 and installed it emulating an Epson LQ-2550. It is recognised by Ubuntu and OpenOffice and other apps but I can't find it when I try to print directly from QCad. I can print from exported PDF images but would prefer to go direct if possible. When I select "Print" from the QCad file menu I open up a printer setup, it defaults to print to file, and clicking the "Print to Printer" button does not give me a way to select my printer. How do I get QCad to find my printer. I tried a complete remove and a new install of QCad with no luck. Any help as I need to print some drawings to set up templates for accurate cutting of parts for furniture. Geoff ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Fair play? Hi All!
I think there was an option to do this, but actually I can't find it
anywhere, including the user's manual.
What I need is to draw a little marker in 90 degree between 2 freely
specified points (using snap of course). I remember there was an option
to do so, and I could specify the length of the line (negative also),
then choose 2 points. (Or I was just dreaming.)
|
a-------------------b
Something like that. :-) I use this to position blocks and other
elements between 2 existing ones. The only option I can see, is actually
drawing a line from A to B and use snap to middle point. But this would
require drawing a lot of extra lines, especially because the lines I
draw are helper lines too. :-)
(So both ---- and | are helper lines, and position and distance of A and
B are completely "random", so I cannot use @30,0 etc.)
Any ideas will be welcomed!
Thanks,
Ferenc

Hi Hugh,
Just had the exact same problem. I found a solution after much
googling.
If you google around a bit you will see that several folks say to
change
line 512 of qcadlib/src/filters/rs_filterdxf.cpp
from:
mtext+=data.text;
to:
mtext+=data.text.c_str();
But that didn't work for me.
Further googling I found that Slackware compilation of qt is
different to other distributions - Slackware has the -no-stl option.
(Whatever that does!).
So - taking a deep breath - I decided to rebuild qt changing the
-no-stl-option to -stl.
Now qcad compiles and runs (although the qcad library browser
doesn't work - yet).
I don't know if I've broken anything by recompiling qt. I use
Gnome - so am not worried about KDE. (My copy of qdvdauthor still
runs OK).
The qt source is on disk 4. I just copied the whole of source/...
from the CD to my hard disk.
Now login as root (logging in as su didn't work for me - the
compilation didn't complete)
Goto .../source/kde/qt
Edit .qt.SlackBuild - change line 75 from -no-stl to -stl
Then rebuild qt using the command:
./qt.SlackBuild
Have several cups of tea whilst waiting for the compile...
This builds a new qt-3.3.3-i486-3.tgz
Remove the old qt - goto /var/log/packages and use the command:
removepkg qt-3.3.3-i486-3
The new Slackware package is created in /tmp/qt-3.3.3-i486-3.tgz)
Install it:
installpkg /tmp/qt-3.3.3-i486-3.tgz
Then I gave the command:
ldconfig
just in case it's needed. It can't hurt.
Now qcad should compile.
Good luck...

At the risk of getting more hate mail, you might consider implementing auto-save like AutoCAD does. There's a auto-save time setting. There's a special folder where auto-save versions of the file are stored with a "$" in the file name or extension. When a new drawing is first created the auto-save file name is generated by the program (using a PID or something I presume). When the file is saved the auto-save file name changes to the drawing file name with the "$" in it somewhere. I don't know if or how these files get cleaned up. There's some manual work that has to happen if you have to revert to the auto-save file, but that's ok in my opinion. I think autosave should never save the file using the original
filename. Maybe something like xxxx_autosave.dxf (?)
This should avoid autosave overwriting anything important.

If an auto save feature is added, please implement it as as option. I
frequently edit existing files that need to be saved as a new file name.
However, I don't always think to save as the new name as soon as the old
file is opened. Auto save would over write data I need to keep.

Hello Andrew, what about implementing an autosave function into QCad. QCad (I use 2.0.4.0 community edition on SuSE 9.1) crashes sometimes (not really often) and we often forget to save our files when working a while on them :-( It would be a great feature, if QCad could save automatically. Typing in 0.04 (about > 1/25.4) or 1:0.04 or 0.04:1 does nothing. What am I missing? After 3.: - Beside the pulldown menu that lets you choose the scaling, you can find three buttons. Click the third one ("Fit to page"). - Select menu "View" - "Autozoom" This is usually the easiest way to get good results. You might then want to adjust the scale factor to a common value that is close to the automatically calculated factor. > In general I think the problems I'm describing can be solved by the > following approach: > > 1. Or switch both drawings to the same unit (e.g. "None") before copy / pasting to avoid the conversion between units. > 3. Pray that the stupid inch system will go away soon. Also a good idea. andrew -- Andrew Mustun ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Most low income households are not online.
