I found this (maybe downright stupid) method for selecting an object
which is overlapped by other objects on the same layer.

I select the object which I hope is the correct object. If it is the
wrong object, I delete it by pressing <DEL>. The I select the next
hopefully right object. If it is not the right object I delete it
again. This way I continue until I finally select the really wanted
object, which became possible because all other objects are deleted.

Once the correct object is selected, I undo all deletions with
CTRL-Z.
To my great joy, deletions ARE undone, but selections ARE NOT. So I
end up with the corrected object selected, and all other objects back
again.

This works especially great when trying to select a closed contour
for
hatching, which can be extremely difficult with overlapping lines.
For
selection of the first line during trimming it also works great. For
selecting the second entity during trimming ... well... not yet.
