How can I fetch most current source code for > GNU Smalltalk from "arch" thing? I've used CVS and SVN. Well, it's GNU Arch (version < 2), but it also goes by the name tla - I don't know the reason, but I'm prepared to guess it has something to do with the author's name (Tom Lord). You can find more information at http://www.gnu.org/software/gnu-arch/. If you said what platform you're on, I might be able to suggest how you might get hold of it. For me (on Gentoo), it's: $ emerge tla Mike

well, 2.1.12 but 2.2 is coming real soon. you can track it with "arch" (also known as bazaar, or tla) which is a better versioning system than CVS (more similar to subversion or to svk, if you know it) except that it has some serious scalability problems. ;-)Also, there's no CVS repository for now, only arch. Sooner or later I'll get to mirroring it on savannah.so 2.1.11 from ftp.gnu.org is the most actual version ?
I guess this was some problems in the backporting of 2.2 improvements to 2.1 (because 2.1 does not have <namespace> in packages.xml).When I fix this bug, I'll post 2.2. :-)*hm* I found out where the " invalid scope resolution " came from. Loading GST/GTK like : Smalltalk addSubspace: #GTK! Namespace current: GTK! PackageLoader fileInPackage: 'GTK'!
'C function g_param_type_init not defined' 'C function g_object_type_init not defined' 'C function g_param_spec_types_init not defined'
I think these are problems in the header files. I'll take a look. Paolo

Moin Guru's, I've tried GTK from GST 2.1.11. Compilation on a Debian/Sarge box run into the problem, that GDK_PIXBUF_ENABLE_BACKEND is required in my include files to define GdkPixbufFormat, GDK_PIXBUF_FORMAT_THREADSAFE, GDK_PIXBUF_FORMAT_SCALABLE and GDK_PIXBUF_FORMAT_WRITABLE. #define GDK_PIXBUF_ENABLE_BACKEND 1 fixed the symptom - the real fix should go into the awk files. Loading the package resulted in the following errors. Still the example files from the ./gst/gtk directory look to work. st> PackageLoader fileInPackage: 'GTK'! Hello.
Just in case anyone cares, this is what I had to do to get a
looks-like-it's-working 64-bit gst on IRIX using the mipspro compiler
and linker. I hope I do not forget anything.
Context info: Octane R12000, IRIX 6.5.26; mipspro 7.3.1. I have the
full set of GNU utilities installed under /usr/freeware; I used GNU
make.
1) configure hacking:
The test for "long double" fails due to gcc options being passed to, and
rejected by, the mipspro compiler. I commented out lines 5085 and
5116, which add -Werror and -Wno-long-double to CFLAGS. Maybe I
removed some other gcc options elsewhere.
2) ./configure --disable-gtk CC=cc CFLAGS="-64 -mips4" LDFLAGS="-64
-mips4"
As you can see, no JIT and no preemption. Will try that later.
3) additional hacking:
libgst/Makefile: removed a -Wall option.
libgst/memzero.h: mipspro cannot swallow the postfix ++ operator in the
COPY macro; problem 'solved' by commenting all uses of LOOP_ALIGN and
LOOP_FINISH, and putting a call to "memset((void*)dst, 0, (size_t)n)"
instead. Suggestions welcome.
libgst/interp.inl: that UINTMAX_C(2) in line 75 causes parsing problems
(?); I put "2UL" in place.
At this point, compilation ends successfully.
4) gmake check:
all 84 tests passed
5) after installation:

It stores them as VariableBinding objects. Currently these are not special cased by the ObjectDumper, but they ought to (i.e. the ObjectDumper should store them as the path from the root namespace, Smalltalk, to the VariableBinding object).Does GNU Smalltalk have 'hard' references to ClassVars in Methods?

I don't know about GNU Smalltalk's implementation of Methods and Blocks binary storage - but what you have to look at if you're doing something like this, is: how to relocate references to classes and objects stored in Methods, how be sure, that these are the same which they were, as you saved the (Compiled)Method (Block) the first time? What with objects which were created at compile time (if these are possible in gst)? Does GNU Smalltalk have 'hard' references to ClassVars in Methods? Kind regards, Markus --

So the problem with m68k is just that it is cross compiled... http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=gnu-smalltalk&ver=2.1.8-2&arch=m68k&stamp=1094298817&file=log&as=rawIndeed, genprims crashes when you try to execute it because it was not compiled *on* a m68k, was it?
I guess I will have to distribute prims.inl, vm.inl and friends. Paolo

It strikes me as absurd that you cannot make a decision to discard an architecture if you want your package to enter Debian. It would be great to see GNU Smalltalk make it into Debian testing - at long last. I think it would give a big boost to the day to day use of Smalltalkto have GNU Smalltalk within the set of supported Debian packages. There is more than a year to go before the next Debian release (etch),and while that may seem like lots of time, similar points were made about a year before sarge came out, and GNU Smalltalk missed that one.
Particularly when almost everybody using m68k is using uClibc or similar. Paolo

You might notice the [ Processor activeProcess suspend ], if you look at www.copyleft.de/OrbitMUD/MUD-GST-loader.st script. The server does not start, as long as the REPL forground process is active. Any yield will process pending interupts once, but it would be nice to have both the REPL and the MUD up and running. I might just miss the method name here.
It is not yet supported, unluckily.
thanks for those methods, i'll update my MUD-Compat.st after lunch. I guess, that GST 2.1.12 or a later version wont require loading this file anymore.
Hm. Actually not, the messages that I sent you are those are not already in 2.2 and that I won't add (e.g. #newFrom: is an abomination if the Blue Book has #withAll: -- you may want to change your code, actually!).
