Well, I used to use Miles Bader's arch repo (which seems to
have had no recent updates :(), and having a ./debian dir available
as an arch branch as well would be awesome.
BTW, does anyone know if there is a more recent arch repo for
emacs--mile--0? The latest I have is
miles@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/emacs--miles--0--patch-44
which is pretty old by his standards :)

I sometimes freeze the latest CVS version installed on my box (after some code change that I liked), and test it out for a couple of weeks, watching to see if anything broke or if something else was changed in CVS which needed fixing. My advice would be to fetch the latest "official" debian dir with apt-get source emacs-snapshot, copy that in your Emacs checkout, and build as usual. (Disabling any conflicting patches.) Or fetch the directory from my baz archive[1], but it's very much in flux, and I don't resynchronize patches regularly (only before an upload, usually on Friday nights). Too late, gone already!
But I guess I'll have to reinstall, now when I try to get
ELisp packages, for example wget-el, apt tries to get xemacs21
instead... odd, since emacs-snapshot-gtk provides emacsen.

You're using emacsclient from emacs21, use emacsclient.emacs-snapshot
instead. To make emacs-snapshot's emacsclient the default, run

Byte-compilation works for emacs-snapshot but fails for emacs21. How
did you remove emacs21? Looks like you removed the emacs21 package, but
still have emacs21-common and emacs21-bin-common, so your installation
is half cooked. Run the following command and remove any remaining
packages:
dpkg -l emacs21\*|grep ii

I have both versions installed side by side and have noticed no difficulties. I used update-alternatives to make emacs-snapshot the default emacs, and I get the stable version by way of the command emacs21. I have not experienced any difficulty so far with this setup. And this is my opportunity to say thanks to those responsible for this effort. It's really wondeful to have access to this new version, Jim

It is a completely separate installation, and I recommend keeping the stable version installed alongside, in case the snapshot is too buggy to be usable (which should not happen, but you never know). Your configuration files should just work unless you have very low-level stuff (complex advice, etc). However, if you use emacs-snapshot to _add_ new customization items to your configuration files, you might end up with incompatible changes. It is perfectly safe to install emacs-snapshot, try it, and remove it if you don't wish to keep it. Note that the 'emacs' command will point to the stable version (emacs21) by default even after installing emacs-snapshot. If you wish to make emacs-snapshot the default Emacs flavor on your system, run 'update-alternatives --config emacs' as root. I believe any interference could be reasonable considered a bug (since presumably this will morph fairly seamlessly into emacs22 once it has been sprinkled with holy gnu pee, which people seem confident will happen sometime before etch is released :). I have both the gtk version and emacs21 installed on my laptop and have had no problems---though, honestly, I'm considering uninstalling emacs21 just to save a little space and because it's not being used. How would the "snapshot" package affect the "stable" version of Emacs already installed by a user, particulary with regard to the configuration files? The Description and Conflicts fields of the various packages don't give any indication whether or not this package can be safely installed alongside the stable version.

I've spent some time today on initial emacs-snapshot packages and I'm happy to report that I've uploaded them a few hours ago. I'm not a Debian Developer, but if there's anything I can do
to help get this into unstable, please let me know.
I'd be willing to build and upload snapshots, but since I'm
not in the web of trust, I guess that's not much help.

Attn: My Name is Mr Emma Sankho a credit and finance manager with African Development Bank here in Dakar Senegal. In my department i discovered an abandoned funds (USD$ 20.5 million) in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customer (MR. ANDREAS SCHRANNER from Munich, Germany) who died along with his entire family in July 2000 in a plane crash. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/859479.stm Since i got information about his death, I have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless some body applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidlings and laws but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or relation died alongside with him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim. It is therefore upon this discovery that I now decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and we don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill. The banking law and guidline here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after Six years, the money will be transfered into the bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of foreigner as next of kin in this business is occassioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner and an Indigene cannot stand as next of kin to a foreigner. Your percentage will be declare to you as soon as you indicate your interest. I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated once you have agreed to get this fund transfered through your account. Therefore, to enable the immediate move of this fund to you arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relation or next of kin of the deceased indicating. 1.Your full name and address 2.Your telephone and fax number for easy communication. 3.Your company's name and address. Upon receipt of your reply, I will send to you by fax or email the text of the application . I will not fail to bring to your notice that this transaction is hitch-free and that you should not entertain any atom of fear as all required arrangements have been made for the movement of the money. You should contact me immediately as soon as you receive this letter. Trusting to hear from you immediately. Contact me on this email;emma_sankho1@xxxxxxxxx Yours Faithfully, EMMA SANKHO
