Hello :)Some times ago I became interested in Debian GNU/NetBSD port and I would like to try on one of my Alpha machines, a DEC 3000 AXP which is not supported by Linux (Turbochannel based Alphastation).
I asked for some testing images but after a brief talk with Micheal Weber I understood that the development of Debian GNU/NetBSD was someway at a dead point (or at least I understood so).
It is clear that there is not a real demand for a NetBSD port neither from the NetBSD user base, nor the Debian user base. Still, I think that it could be useful, so I started some research to find out what are the main difficulties in porting and wheter I could help in this process.
I worked some days in summer holidays, and some more these winter holidays. Finally I have a comfortable system to work on (a 4-way AlphaServer 4100 with enough disk space) and things got easyier (and faster!) After some initial mistakes (compiling Debian packages in NetBSD native environment) I set up a Debian chroot and compiled packages in the chroot with a raw GCC installed in /usr/local.
Development is now at a point that the Debian system could be booted stand alone from SRM and many packages, libraries and tools are binary compiled directly from Debian sources with little or no patches at all. There are a few alien libraries in /lib* copied from NetBSD on the Debian system. The total count is for 260 packages compiled in *-netbsd-alpha.deb packages including a bleeding (but working) NetBSD libc package.
Now I have to decide if all this work has been a funny hobby, or if I should take it seriously. I have the interest in going on, some time to be dedicated to this work and enough luck to compile packages with very little patches (and little NetBSD knowledge!)
It should be a positive influence of GNU/kFreeBSD work! :)As time goes on, Debian is becoming more and more complex and porting to other kernels should be come more and more difficult so I think that at least a minimal working set of Debian should be achived now.
I would ask you all for some guidelines and advices in development, and development directions too.For those interested in testing the work, I can provide the packages, or a tarball of the Debian filesystem and installation howto.
Any advice is welcome! Happy new year to everyone! gl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bsd-REQUEST@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi,
Yes, fortunately I have some experience with FreeBSD and I had already
selected the iwi module when installing... but I am missing some
tools, like iwicontrol
Also, I don't have any idea where to copy the firmware, so that iwi finds it
iwi0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet6 fe80::216:6fff:fea4:62d7%iwi0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x7
inet 0.0.0.0 netmask 0xff000000 broadcast 255.255.255.255
ether 0:16:6f:a4:62:d7
media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect
status: no carrier
ssid "" channel 1
authmode OPEN privacy OFF txpowmax 100 protmode CTS
The radio transitter is on
# sysctl dev.iwi.0.radio
dev.iwi.0.radio: 1
I have put the firmware in /lib/firmware, because this is the way I'd
do it with debian (linux)
I have also noticed that installing gnome-utils yields a problem
E: gnome-utils: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
and iceweasel (nice to have that one in the repository!) is behaving a
bit odd... also, when I change the spacework and go from 1 to, say, 2,
the graphics is freezing for ~1-2 seconds
Ok, I know this is an alpha, but I just wanted to report...
So, my main question is: where to put the firmware, so that iwi finds
it (I don't have man iwi) and how to connect to a wep access point
Cheers,
Pau Amaro Seoane

Hi.
Now I wonder how to configure my wlan... in linux I would install ipw2200 and download the intel firmare (it's a centrino) per hand... Or should I go the freeBSD way? I mean iwi?
You can try "insmod if_iwi", as there is /lib/modules/6.1-1-686/if_iwi.ko
Another important point... how to figure out which modules can I need? And for the ethernet card I just chose _all_ to be sure I have connection... but I guess this is not the elegant way...
For ethernet card you can try to deselect all as many ethernet cards are builtin. Or check name(s) of current interface(s) by "ifconfig -a"
and leave only appropriate if_xxx.
Is ACPI supported?

ahem, sorry about that... I am just a bit too excited! I just installed fluxbox and from there installed synaptic and chose the missing packages... of course, this could have been done perfectly from the command line... I LOVE debian-bsd! Please keep it free and with no blobs in the future! We need distros (I mean OS, sorry :) ) like this one Now I wonder how to configure my wlan... in linux I would install ipw2200 and download the intel firmare (it's a centrino) per hand... Or should I go the freeBSD way? I mean iwi? Another important point... how to figure out which modules can I need? And for the ethernet card I just chose _all_ to be sure I have connection... but I guess this is not the elegant way... Is ACPI supported? ok, too many questions... I'm just happy about my Christmas present :) thanks! Pau Amaro 2006/12/30, Vim Visual <vim.unix@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>:
Hi, after my successful startx the first thing I tried to do was apt-get install gnome-session. This downloaded a bunch of files but in the end I got "some files are missing". I guess this is because maybe the whole dependencies have not been yet totally exported to debian-bsd... after that I install gdm and I am able to login after having created a user but the splash screen freezes and that's it. Is it due to some packages missing? If you, is there a fully functional wm in debian-bsd? I am itching to use it! thanks for the good work! Pau Amaro

Hi Petr, thanks for the help again. The modules are not in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/ Changing ati to vesa didn't help at all. vesa was not found either... I still think it has to do with the iso. thanks for the help... still it doesn't work... even with your
xorg.conf (slightly modified for my screen resolution
I attach the log.log file
I still believe that something is wrong with my install. Everytime I
try it (~7 so far) the "GENERIC" cannot be loaded and then I get a
warning that the kernel module could not be found or loaded or
whatever...
Just in case of I reburnt the iso file but the problem is the same. My
laptop is an ibm t43p. I can send you dmesg if you wish...

Please, could you try Xorg -configure -verbose 2>log.log.
It might generate appropriate hw sections for you.
Also see attached my xorg.conf, it might work for you,
as we both have driver ati.
You can also try to use driver vesa.

These modules are not kernel modules, but xorg modules,
they should be in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/
ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/

Do you have installed packages xserver-xorg-input-kbd
and xserver-xorg-input-mouse ?
For list of other possible packages try
"apt-cache search xserver-xorg"

I know that some of the mouse conf are wrong but this should not be a big problem. Another point is that the modules it's asking for are not available with a dpkg-reconfig module-init-tools
These modules are not kernel modules, but xorg modules,
they should be in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/

What's the problem with this conf?? Screen is there...
I know that some of the mouse conf are wrong but this should not be a
big problem.
Another point is that the modules it's asking for are not available
with a dpkg-reconfig module-init-tools
thanks for your patience,
Pau

Hi, I am having troubles with the install disc. By the end of the installation the cd cannot load sometimes the kernel, sometimes the documentation etc... I thought it could be my cd is damaged, so that I downloaded the iso again and md5sum debian-20061213-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso shows f8c1531e61750e757ba6600687186ff3 debian-20061213-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso whilst in the web page it is 51e8a958b07199f2c3904083dd55062e1d3021d9bbe68771a2e7f9ce4e6868e1a512b00289fee538bcf78e3205c292faaad5cdfa2f9ba6c00d57a55c828ad4ce debian-20061213-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso this is obviously not the same message digest... now what? Petr is encouraging me to install debian-bsd (he seems to be the only member of this list having done it) let me know Cheers, Pau 2006/12/29, Petr Salinger <Petr.Salinger@xxxxxxxxx>:

1) Is there any way to upgrade to Debian-*bsd an existing, running FreeBSD installation (wheter it makes sense or not)
I am unsure about this. You can prepare filesystem on a different partition/slice and use chroot to install basic files. Look inside iso at http://glibc-bsd.alioth.debian.org/install-cd/kfreebsd-i386/20061213/,
there should be base.tgz somewhere inside debian-20061213-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso. But at least multi-threaded programs will not work under pristine FreeBSD kernel.
2) Can *.deb packages co-exist with classical BSD ports ?
It is not good idea. Please use chroot for things like this.
3) Are the *.deb packages for *bsd handled the same old way they did on linux, or they simply use /usr/local filesystem ?
In the same way as on other Debain system - usual prefix is /usr
4) What about some specs I once read about leaving the use of /usr/local to the system administrator (Maybe these are concerning only to Linux...)
There are (almost) no files from any *.deb in /usr/local/ It is really left for local system administrator. Sorry for terse answers, but my Christmas time is dedicated mainly to my family. Petr

Missing installer, not in official debian.org archive, just unstable archive (not etch/testing), "only" 80% packages ported. For etch archive coverage, see also http://glibc-bsd.alioth.debian.org/NOTES
Now, I would like to go for the whole thing and install xorg etc etc but... how worhty is it? I don't want to spend many hours on one thing that's going to break often.
"apt-get update" and "apt-get install xserver-xorg x-window-system-core" should suffice.
One more question: What is the licence? Is it "GPL Nr X and ABOVE" (that word proved to be important, as Linus removed it from its kernel and now doesn't want to update the gpl version) or is it BSD?
Each package have own licence, for kernel see http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/k/kfreebsd-5/current/copyright

Hi, I am looking forward to getting a stable release of debian-bsd. I have read in the web page that there are still a couple of major bugs. Which are these? On the other hand, I've had some troubles when installing it... I have tried to install debian-bsd on my fujitsu siemens lifebook p7010. After slicing I chose the option install from CD and the installer found two CD devices (have only one) and it could not load the files. Choosing one or the other did not solve anything. Then I got a message: the GENERIC (guess kernel) could not be loaded and was prompted the "press alt+F3". Still, I continued with the installation and in the end everything seemed fine to me. Since I was not sure about the driver for the ethernet card, I chose _all_ of them (ahem) and got a debian-bsd system without X. Now, I would like to go for the whole thing and install xorg etc etc but... how worhty is it? I don't want to spend many hours on one thing that's going to break often. Just asking. Don't get offended. I really do look forward to seeing debian-bsd in its final form. One more question: What is the licence? Is it "GPL Nr X and ABOVE" (that word proved to be important, as Linus removed it from its kernel and now doesn't want to update the gpl version) or is it BSD? Cheers, Pau

Hello porters, I've just announced the schedule [1] for the release of the Installation Guide to be included with the Etch release. That schedule leaves room for bigger updates until Dec 31 and for minor ones until Jan 7. This means that if you have any updates you'd like to get in for your port, there is not much time left. From Jan 1, please consult before directly committing any updates (or send patches). My apologies for not sending out a reminder earlier. Cheers, FJP [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/12/msg01492.html

Hi all, especially Guillem Jover ;-) Would be possible to create weekly snapshot(s) of kfreebsd archive(s) ? Given cwd is "http://ftp.gnuab.org/debian/" by something like DEST=`date +%Y%m%d`/ cp -al pool-kfreebsd-amd64 $DEST cp -al pool-kfreebsd-i386 $DEST cp -a dists $DEST Given all deb files are already in obsolete/, the space cost of each such snapshot would be at about 100 MB. IMHO, the current (or just before etch) unstable+unreleased is (would be) in a good shape and will be very usefull for people who wants to just test kfreebsd. It might also serve as base for real etch based snapshot. Many thanks for considering this. Petr

Current status would be beta for kfreebsd-i386 and late alpha or early beta for kfreebsd-amd64. The easiest way is to evaluate is to just try, i.e. inside qemu. Petr

I also found out yesterday that the ifconfig from net-tools version 6.1-6 is

net-tools 6.1-4 and freebsd-hackedutils 5.2.1-32. With the latest packages I
get this behaviour:
